Files carry notes about themselves, called metadata: EXIF, XMP and IPTC in photos, atoms in videos, ID3 and Vorbis tags in music, document properties in Office files and PDFs. Everything here that names a person, a place, a device or a time is taken out, and the copy is read again before you can download it. Only the notes are touched: pictures, sound and text are copied byte for byte. What you can see or hear stays, like a face, a street sign or a name typed into the text.
