A character is what you see as one: an emoji, a flag or an accented letter counts once, however many code points it is built from. A word is anything between spaces with a letter or digit in it; Chinese, Japanese, Thai and other languages written without spaces are split into words by your browser's dictionary. Paragraphs are lines with something on them. Reading assumes 238 words a minute, or 300 characters of Chinese or Japanese, and reading aloud 140 words. A text message (plain SMS, not iMessage or WhatsApp) holds 160 characters from the basic GSM set, or 70 once anything outside it appears, such as an emoji, a curly quote or a non-breaking space; longer ones go as parts of 153 or 67. Twitter counts every link as 23, and emoji and most characters outside European scripts as 2. Bluesky allows 300 characters. Search engines cut a page title at about 60 characters and its meta description at about 155.
